What is Hung Gar?

Hung Gar is a traditional Chinese martial art that commands respect from its students and its teachers. It offers many aspects of training to individuals because it is a soft and hard style of martial art. Hung Gar is said to have its origins in the Southern Shaolin temple in Fukien Province of Southern China. The style incoporates the five animals; Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Dragon, and Snake as well as the five elements; Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal(Gold), Water. Traiing include Qi Gong and traditional Chinese weapons. The style utilizes various training methods to condition and strenghen the body and develop internal energy. Hung Gar emphasizes strong stances as well as long and short hand techniques. The style utilizes straight, circular, and angular movements to develop efficiency of movement, as well as coordination. This results in superior inside maneuvers evident in the variation of kicks that are mostly executed below the waist. Efficiency in defending against attacks with strong counter techniques, incorporates both hard and soft actions in a multitude of directions. Hung Gar possesses more intricate hand techniques and stance maneuvers than the majority of other traditional systems.
